JP (John-Patrick) Hartnett is an Irish designer, educator, writer and musician. He lives in London.
As a designer, JP has worked in the arts and culture sector for over a decade, producing work for print and screen including a period (2013 – 2016) at Pony Ltd. in London, where he worked for clients including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The British Council, The Irish Museum of Modern Art and Marlborough Contemporary.
JP is Senior Lecturer in Contextual and Theoretical Studies at London College of Communication (University of the Arts London) and Lecturer in Critical and Contextual Studies at University of Brighton. He was Acting Coordinator of Critical and Contextual Studies on BA Visual Communication at the Institute of Art, Design & Technology Dún Laoghaire in 2012, and has been an Associate Lecturer at Kingston University and Kingston College. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK.
JP’s writing and research explores the intersection of graphic design and typography with concerns of technology, history, education and politics. He writes regularly for Eye Magazine, and has been published by Bloomsbury, AIGA Eye on Design, and Artefact: The Journal of the Irish Association of Art Historians, as well as by a number of galleries and academic institutions. He has presented research internationally at conferences such as CAA (USA) and Typo Day (India).
In the late 2000s JP began creating music on piano, which he has released independently and on 1631 Recordings and Vintermusik. He has also been involved with various collaborative music projects, including the improvised techno duo Ordinate (Earwiggle, Abscissa) with John Flynn. He has performed at the Barbican and St. John on Bethnal Green in London, and at the Open Ear festival on Sherkin Island, off the coast of Cork.
